Historical Background

Kilkenny's history stretches back to the 6th century when St. Canice founded a monastery here. The Normans arrived in 1169, and Strongbow built the first castle in 1172. For centuries, Kilkenny served as the capital of the Lordship of Ireland, hosting numerous parliaments. The Butler family transformed the castle into a magnificent residence over 800 years of ownership. The Medieval Mile, connecting the castle to the cathedral, preserves architecture spanning from the 12th to 19th centuries, making Kilkenny one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.

Folklore & Legends

"Kilkenny is infamous for the witch trials of 1324, when Dame Alice Kyteler became the first person in Ireland condemned for witchcraft. Local legend says she escaped to England, but her servant Petronilla was burned at the stake. Some say Dame Alice's spirit still haunts Kyteler's Inn, her former home, now one of the city's most atmospheric pubs. The Butler family crest features a falcon, and it's said that as long as falcons nest in the castle grounds, the family's legacy will endure."
