About Inistioge

Nestled in the Nore Valley, Inistioge (pronounced 'Inish-teeg') is often called the most beautiful village in Ireland. Its picturesque ten-arch bridge, tree-lined square, and Georgian architecture have made it a favorite filming location for movies and television.

The nearby Woodstock Gardens offer magnificent woodland walks and panoramic views, while the village itself invites leisurely exploration of its craft shops, riverside walks, and welcoming pubs.

Historical Background

Inistioge was founded around an Augustinian priory established in 1210. The village grew around the priory, with the distinctive ten-arch bridge built in the 18th century to span the River Nore. Woodstock House, once one of Ireland's grandest estates, was tragically burned during the Civil War in 1922, but its magnificent gardens have been restored and are now open to the public. The village gained international fame as a filming location for 'Circle of Friends' (1995) and 'Widow's Peak' (1994).

Folklore & Legends

"Local legend tells of the 'Fairy Bridge' – the old stone bridge is said to be protected by the Good People. Travelers were once advised to greet the fairies when crossing, especially at twilight. The woods around Woodstock are rumored to be home to a ghostly white lady, believed to be the spirit of a former resident of the great house. On still nights, some claim to hear music drifting from the ruined priory."
